Brodkorb Gets it Wrong
By Jeff Fecke | October 3, 2006
Well, I’m just stunned. Michael Brodkorb has now launched a baseless and false attack on Minnesota Monitor and the Center for Independent Media. (No link. I don’t link to liars and purveyors of dirt. More on that in coming days.)
At any rate, the Kennedy Campaign staffer has accused Minnesota Monitor of being a cat’s-paw for George Soros and his evil legion of doom, Media Matters. Now, nothing would make me happier than getting that sweet, sweet Soros money–I’d be like a second cousin of Atrios–but sadly, the relationship between the Center and Media Matters is somewhat less exciting than Mike’s portrayal. I’ll leave it to Robin Marty to explain:
A majority of Brodkorb’s attack involves a link between Media Matters and the Center for Independent Media that even Brodkorb himself admits does not exist. “I spoke with a representative of the Center for Independent Media and she informed me they are renting space from Media Matters and they do not receive any funding form Media Matters.”
To clarify, the Center for Independent Media is not receiving funding from Media Matters. The only financial arrangement they have is to rent office space.
I have just two final points to make.
One good thing about this attack is that it has brought to my attention to the fact that my disclosure is unclear as to the amount of my stipend from the Center. I have now clarified this in my disclosure. While I did note that I would be getting paid in my very first post about the Center, I want to make sure my disclosure is complete.
Additionally, unlike Mr. Brodkorb, this completes my disclosure. I receive no other money from any other source to blog. (I did receive about $80 in blogads over three years, but I no longer run those ads on my site.)
I will have no further statement on this matter; Michael Brodkorb is not a fair player, and it is pointless to engage him; discussion with him will not result in light, but heat. I do appreciate the attack, though. If all Brodkorb has is that the Center rents some space from someone, they must be mighty clean indeed.

The point is…is that you didn’t disclose the monetary amount in the first place, you waited until MDE attacked. That’s wrong, so don’t come across better than he is. This is about FULL disclosure which you lacked as well as he did.

That’s a somewhat fair point, which is why I’ve rectified the situation. Still, I’d argue that I have two significant points on Brodkorb. One: I did at the very least disclose all sources of payment. That’s something Brodkorb flatly didn’t do. Two: I’ve always blogged under my real name, meaning that it is easy to research me. Michael Brodkorb has not. He disclosed his name only under threat of lawsuit.
Finally, I’m paid to be a journalist, and I don’t work for a campaign. Brodkorb’s paid to work for a campaign. That’s apples and oranges.
