The Other Shoe Drops

Though Amanda and Melissa have both stated their resignations came on their own–and I believe them–I also believe that the Edwards campaign has to be responsible for failing to protect their staff forcefully enough. This does not augur well for the primary and general. Accordingly, I am withdrawing my endorsement of John Edwards. He could still win it back–he hasn’t done anything to make himself toxic to me, at least–but he’s hurt himself overall, I think, and I misdoubt not just with me.
Incidentally, I still have yet to read anything–anything–from Shakes that can be even remotely considered anti-Catholic. Which is why I still believe this had nothing to do with “bigotry,” and everything to do with intimidating two intelligent, articulate, and confident women–and by extension, any woman with the temerity to think her views were actually worthy of consideration. Frances Kissling says she feels Bill Donohue is an abuser, and I would tend to agree; certainly, he took far too much glee in bringing down these women.
Finally, on a day when Glenn Reynolds called for America to create secret death squads, I’m not particularly interested in hearing how “extreme” Marcotte and McEwan are. The right in this country and the Bush administration in particular has spent the last six years slowly shredding the Constitution and our nation’s soul. If you are capable of believing America needs death squads–something that we managed to get by without in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and Gulf War I–then you have no understanding of what America is about. That is extremism. That is unhinged. The use of profanity is far less profane than what the right desires–and I am sick of them moaning and whining about the “lack of civility” on the left. We’ll be civil to you when you stop daydreaming about the end of the core of American civilization.
