So Funny I Forgot to Laugh

    By Jeff Fecke | July 15, 2008

phunny.jpgSo as everyone knows, that wacky John McCain is the most hilariousest guy on the face of the earth. Why, he’s charmed pretty much every pool journalist, what with the jokes and the laughs and the general japery.

What types of jokes does John McCain tell? Oh, you know…awesome ones. Like, say, this one from 1986, for example:

Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’

Ha her hum…huh? Did John McCain just really make a joke about a woman being raped and beaten within an inch of her life? That can’t possibly be. I mean, someone must just be making stuff up, knowing that it’s impossible to find information from 22 years ago. Well, except for this contemporaneous coverage that Tedski found (.pdf).

Now, McCain said at the time that he didn’t remember telling a rape joke, which isn’t what you’d call the most forceful of denials. I would think one would remember that one had told a joke about a woman being raped by a gorilla on multiple occasions.

As for the joke itself, the sexism inherent in it is obvious. And I don’t think it’s oversensitive to notice that there’s a racist subtext to it as well. Classy, John, classy.

This joke is whatever the opposite of funny is — horrifying, sad, pathetic. Kind of like Angry McCranky himself. Thoroughly disgusting, through and through.
