I Know You’re Dumb as Paint
By Jeff Fecke | April 29, 2009
Oh no she didn’t:
Rep. Michele Bachmann spoke out against federal hate crimes bill being considered on the U.S. House floor on Wednesday by conflating gays and lesbians with pedophiles, and saying that the bill would protect pedophiles from hate crimes.
“[A]pparently people who are practicing pedophiles would be considered protected under this legislation, but not, I understand, veterans, not, I understand, pregnant women, not, I understand, 85-year-old grandmothers would be protected under this law,” she said. “But who would be protected? A pedophile, someone who considers themselves gay, someone who considers themselves transgender, someone who considers themselves a cross-dresser? That is who is protected.”
Sweet Zombie Jesus.
Look, I usually find Michele Bachmann’s asshattery somewhat amusing. But there’s nothing amusing about this. Raw, naked bigotry, pure, unadulterated hatred — that’s not funny. That’s not amusing. That’s disgusting. And Michele Bachmann should be ashamed of herself. God knows I am.

The thought just struck me that she may not want to be re-elected, and this is her way of making sure she is “retired,” without having to do it herself. This way, if she goes down to an inglorious defeat, it’s someone else’s fault (evil liberals, gays and lesbians, the Trilateral Commission, whoever). Withdrawing voluntarily would make her look defeated, but this way, she can be a martyr.
Far-fetched, it is true, but not too long ago I would have thought that the idea a member of Congress from Minnesota wold spew this kind of rubbish was pretty far-fetched.

You know, Jeff, in your previous post, you said she should never stop talking. And I agree, there is something to be said for letting stupid/crazy people prove how stupid/crazy they are by allowing them to say whatever they want (in fact, I think that’s in the book of Proverbs).
What concerns me most about her comments is that they are almost verbatim from the American Family Association (considered a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center). In fact, it would appear from her comments that she took the AFA talking points, made an incoherent, unhinged rant out of them, and then delivered that rant for all to see.
And Randy, I would almost agree that her goal would be to get fired, except I’ve seen worse. Here in Oklahoma, we have state Representative Sally Kern. She said gay people were more of a threat to national security than terrorism or Islam (yeah, Islam…the whole religion…total threat to national security). Sally is also a card-carrying, unapologetic member of the John Birch Society, and is licensed to carry a concealed weapon (which she has TWICE forgotten to take out of her purse before entering the State Capitol Building, where weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited). She got re-elected back in November, during the so-called “great repudiation.”
So, while Bachmann’s comments are out of line (shocker) and strikingly ignorant (again, shocker), I’m willing to bet that the people who elected her the first time, and re-elected her the second time, will most likely have no problem electing her the third time.
Just like Senator Tom “lesbianism is so rampant, girls ought not be allowed to go to the bathroom in pairs” Coburn (R-Oklahoma). Perhaps Coburn and Bachmann can throw a joint victory party in November of 2010. That’s crazy squared!
