    The Mitt Hits the Fan

    By Jeff Fecke | March 23, 2010

The passage of health care reform will make and break a lot of political careers. It remains to be seen, of course, exactly who wins and loses politically from the fallout — though I think most benefits will ultimately accrue to Democrats.

But on the Republican side, there is one clear early loser in the passage of health care reform: Willard Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts.

It was during his time in office that Romney signed into law health care reform that bore a striking resemblance to the health care reform America would ultimately get. You know, the socialist/communist/fascist ObamaCare that is leading directly to Ragnarök. And while Romney is doing his level best to rage incoherently against passage of the bill, it’s not making his own complicity in making Massachusetts into a Stalinist hellscape go away.

Now, Mitt may be hoping that he can simply change his opinion on things and not get called on it, just like he did with abortion and gay rights. Hey, it worked to propel him to almost a third-place finish in the GOP race in 2008. But I think Josh Marshall nails the primary problem with that:

I think Mitt’s done. Unless Health Care Reform ends up having no part in the 2012 presidential election. And even if that’s true, too much of the early spadework for the nomination will have to be done in the period where the GOP is the anti-Health Care Reform party.

Yep. Mitt had the misfortune to be on the wrong side of an issue that, we are assured, is the most seriousest threat to American democracy ever. While I strongly suspect that by 2012, most Americans will be neutral-to-positive on health care reform, I have no doubt that the footsoldiers of the right will be rabidly pushing for full repeal. Somewhere in Eagan, Tim Pawlenty smiles.
